Researchers just found why work-from-home days feel steadier
For years the work-from-home productivity argument has run on vibes: your vibes about your own focus, your manager's vibes about whether you're really working. A study published this year finally measured what changes hour to hour, not just whether output goes up or down at the end of the week.
The paper is called "Steady as She Goes: Remote Work Benefits Daily Goal Progress Through Reduced Energy Variability," written by Andrew A. Bennett, Kathleen R. Keeler, Emily D. Campion and Sheila K. Keener, and published in the journal Organization Science as part of a special issue on remote and hybrid work. The researchers tracked 219 employees at a single organization that allows both remote and in-office schedules, capturing their energy levels hour by hour across five straight workdays. That's 4,812 individual readings. Then they compared, for the same people, what happened to that energy on a home day versus an office day.
The number that matters isn't the one you'd guess
The obvious hypothesis is that people simply have more energy at home: fewer commutes, more control over the coffee supply. That's not what the data shows. Average energy levels were roughly the same on home days and office days. What differed was how much that energy swung around within a single day, and on home days it swung about 33 percent less.
That steadiness turned out to be the whole story. A one-point reduction in daily energy variability was associated with 26 percent more progress toward that day's work goals, and 31 percent faster progress. Not more energy. Less wobble in the energy you already had.
Co-author Emily Campion, of the Tippie College of Business at the University of Iowa, put the mechanism plainly: "energy fluctuations at work prompted by more and varied stimuli can make it more challenging to dig into our work and make progress." It's a small sentence doing a lot of work. The problem was never a lack of fuel. It was the fuel gauge jerking around all day.
Where the swings come from
Nobody's energy is flat in an office, and it isn't flat at home either. The difference is what's producing the movement. An office day is a string of small, unscheduled events: someone stops by your desk, a meeting runs long and eats the block you'd set aside, a hallway conversation turns into twenty minutes you didn't plan for. Each one is minor. None of them alone would ruin your day. Stacked hourly across eight hours, they're what the researchers are describing as varied stimuli, and the nervous system pays for every one of them whether the event was good, bad, or entirely neutral.
Home days have their own interruptions, obviously. They're just fewer, and more of them are ones you chose the timing of.
This isn't really a story about location
Read one level down and the finding stops being about geography and starts being about input density. Location is just the easiest proxy researchers had for it. Plenty of people work from home and still spend the day getting bounced between eighteen apps, each one pinging on its own schedule, which we wrote about when we covered last month's research on focus fragmentation. Those people are going to see the same energy swings this study found in the office, commute or no commute. The variable that actually predicts progress is how many varied, unscheduled things are hitting you per hour, and a laptop full of loud software can manufacture that just as reliably as an open floor plan can.

The honest caveats
Two hundred and nineteen people at one employer over five days is a real, peer-reviewed dataset, not a huge one. Everyone in it already had permission to work remotely, which means the sample skews toward roles and managers comfortable with that arrangement in the first place. Five days also can't tell you what happens over a year, once novelty wears off or home starts collecting its own version of unscheduled interruptions.
And to be fair to the other side of the return-to-office argument: this study measured goal progress and energy, not mentorship, onboarding, culture, or the kind of whiteboard session that genuinely benefits from four people in a room. Those are real arguments for physical proximity, and this paper doesn't touch any of them. We looked at where the broader policy fight actually stands in our piece on the 2026 remote work numbers, and the honest answer is that "where you work" and "how well you work" are being decided by different departments for different reasons, and this study only speaks to one of them.
What to actually do with it
If you have any control over your schedule, the practical move isn't "work from home more," it's "protect the low-variability blocks for the work that actually needs to move." Save the steady stretches for the thing with the deadline, not for clearing your inbox.
If you don't control your schedule, or your job genuinely requires being in a room with people, you can still cut the swings you do control. That mostly means fewer places something might be waiting for you. One board that shows what's actually yours right now beats eighteen apps each holding a sliver of it, a point we keep coming back to because the data keeps making it for us.
Nobody needed a peer-reviewed paper to tell them that a day full of interruptions feels worse than a quiet one. What this one adds is a number: steadier isn't a nice-to-have, it's worth roughly a quarter of your daily progress, and that's true whether the interruptions are walking past your desk or buzzing in your pocket.
