Axtio vs Basecamp: two ways to keep small teams calm
Basecamp has argued for calmer work for years. Its makers, 37signals, wrote books about it, priced it simply and kept it free of the dashboards and ticket hierarchies that heavier tools accumulate. Axtio shares some of that philosophy. So it is a fair question: which one should a small team use?
The honest answer is that they solve different problems, and many teams could use both.
What Basecamp does well
- Communication in one place. Message boards, chat (Campfire), check-in questions and automatic updates keep discussion out of email.
- Projects as containers. Each project holds its to-dos, documents, files, schedule and discussion.
- Client access. You can invite clients into a project and control what they see.
- Opinionated calm. Fewer notifications, written updates over meetings.
- Hill Charts show progress as "figuring it out" versus "making it happen".
For a team that wants one home for project communication, Basecamp is a strong choice. Check Basecamp's own pricing page for current plans.
What Axtio does well
Axtio does one thing: it shows who has the ball on every action. Projects are rows. Columns are Mine, Other, Next Steps and Done. You see at a glance what you owe, what you are waiting on, and what is next, across every project.
- Waiting is first-class. Actions in Other show how many days they have been waiting and get flagged when they need chasing.
- No signup, no server, for the free version. Everything stays in your browser's local storage.
- Fast to learn. If you understand "who has the ball?", you understand the app.
The core difference
Basecamp organises communication around projects. Axtio organises responsibility across projects.
In Basecamp, a project contains everything about that project. In Axtio, one grid shows the state of every project together, with a focus on the handoffs between people.
Who should pick Basecamp
- Teams that need a shared place for discussions, files and client communication
- Agencies that want clients inside the project
- Teams replacing scattered email and chat
Who should pick Axtio
- Individuals and small teams who mostly need to track actions and waiting items
- People who want a tool that works locally with no account
- Teams who already have chat and docs, and need a clear view of who owes what
Using both
Some teams use Basecamp for communication and documents, and a personal Axtio board to track their own actions and what they are waiting on from the Basecamp threads. That split works because the tools do not overlap much.
Price and data
Basecamp is a hosted service with paid plans and a free tier. Axtio's free tier runs entirely in the browser with your data stored locally; a paid tier with cloud sync is built and currently behind an early-access waitlist. See JSON export and data freedom.
