Will AI Replace Project Managers?

AI can write the status update, draft the plan, and flag the risk. But the core of project management was never the paperwork.

The parts AI will take

AI is coming for the clerical layer of project management: compiling status reports, summarizing meetings, drafting timelines, and nagging for updates. These are genuine chores, and handing them off is a relief. That layer shrinks fast.

The parts it can't

Project management is fundamentally about people: negotiating priorities, reading tension in a room, deciding whose ball a slippery task really is. Those are judgment calls rooted in trust and context. A model can suggest; only a person can commit and be accountable.

From reporting to seeing

If AI kills the status report, the remaining need is simply to see the truth of the work. That's a design problem, not an AI problem. A board where who-has-the-ball is visible by layout means coordination happens by glance instead of by meeting.

The role evolves, not ends

The PM who spends less time compiling and more time deciding becomes more valuable, not less. AI removes the busywork; it doesn't remove the person who owns the outcome.
