“Who Has the Ball?” — A Framework for Getting Anything Done

Strip project management down to its core and one question remains: whose move is it? Everything else is decoration.

One question rules them all

Behind every stalled project is an unanswered question: whose move is it right now? Not what's the deadline, not how big is it — whose turn. When nobody knows, the task sits in limbo, each party assuming the other will act. Ambiguity of ownership is the root cause of most dropped work.

Four possible answers

There are only four honest answers to 'who has the ball': it's mine to move, it's someone else's, it's queued for later, or it's finished. That's precisely the four courts — Mine, Other, Next Steps, Done. The framework isn't a metaphor bolted on afterward; it's the whole model.

Why it beats status labels

Traditional statuses — 'in progress', 'blocked', 'review' — describe the task's state but dodge the accountability question. 'Who has the ball' forces an owner every time. A task can't hide in a vague status; it has to sit in someone's court, which is what makes work actually move.

Apply it everywhere

The framework scales from a personal errand to a team project. Any time work stalls, ask the question and put the task in the right court. Clarity of ownership is the cheapest productivity upgrade there is.
